Security personnel may handle keys, visitor information, incident records, valuable assets and difficult interactions. Recruitment therefore needs more than checking physical appearance or availability. Employers need evidence of reliability, judgement, communication and suitability for the specific assignment.
Vetting must be lawful, proportionate and respectful of personal data. Organisations should use current Tanzanian employment and data-protection requirements and obtain professional advice for sensitive checks. The purpose is informed risk management, not unfair exclusion.
Define the role before advertising
A clear job description names the site, shift pattern, responsibilities, reporting line, physical requirements, customer interaction and required records. A control-room operator, event officer and residential guard need different strengths.
Separate essential requirements from preferences. This supports fair selection and prevents hiring a candidate for an undefined idea of “security” that changes after deployment.
- State decision-making and escalation responsibilities.
- Identify language, writing and technology needs.
- Describe working hours and environmental conditions honestly.
- Set measurable standards for attendance and conduct.
Verify consistently and with consent
Use the same documented verification process for comparable candidates. Confirm identity and employment history, contact genuine referees and examine unexplained gaps through respectful questions. Where additional checks are justified, obtain appropriate consent and protect the results.
A reference conversation should ask about attendance, integrity, teamwork, supervision and eligibility for rehire rather than inviting rumours. Record who completed each check and any limitation in the information received.
Interview for judgement
Scenario questions reveal how candidates think. Ask what they would do when a senior employee lacks identification, when two instructions conflict or when a visitor becomes angry. Strong answers balance procedure, respect and timely escalation.
Practical exercises can assess observation, report writing and radio communication. Explain the standard first, then evaluate consistently. Avoid surprise tests unrelated to the real work.
Treat probation as structured onboarding
Vetting does not end on the first day. New officers need site induction, supervised shifts, clear post orders and regular feedback. Supervisors should check attendance, uniform, records, conduct and understanding of emergency procedures.
Concerns should be documented and handled through fair HR processes. Strong employees also need recognition, training and a visible path for development. Retention supports security because experienced people understand the site and its normal patterns.
The probation review should use examples from observed work and allow the employee to respond. Confirm strengths, required improvement, support and a follow-up date. A documented conversation is more useful than waiting until the final day to announce a decision.
